2020 Speaker biographies

Professor David Simmons

MA (Cantab) MB BS FRCP FRACP MD (Cantab)

David is Professor of Medicine, Macarthur Clinical School, Western Sydney University; Director, Endocrinology Department, Campbelltown Hospital; Director, South Western Sydney Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism Translational Research Unit (DOMTRU); Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne and Visiting Professor, University of Örebro, Sweden.

He is a previous President of the Australasian Diabetes In Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) and in 2020, the first New Zealander to be awarded the American Diabetes Association Norbert Freinkel award for his Diabetes in Pregnancy research. In 2011 he was awarded the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Priscilla Kincaid-Smith award for his work relating to diabetes in the community. He has led several trials/studies in diabetes in pregnancy, diabetes prevention, diabetes management and diabetes epidemiology. He has over 300 publications including the first book on Integrated Diabetes Care.

Dr Janak de Zoysa

BHB 1992 (Auckland); MB ChB 1995 (Auckland); MRCP 1999 (UK); FRACP 2002; FRCP 2012 (London); PostGradDip in Clinical Education 2013 (Auckland), FASN 2016

Janak de Zoysa is a graduate of the University of Auckland (1995) and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2002), Royal college of Physicians of London (2012). He is a Nephrologist at Waitematā DHB and is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Auckland. His interests are in Vasculitis, Dialysis, and Medical Education.

He is married with four children, is a cricket (tragic) and plays club tennis.

In partnership with Counties Manukau Health and Royal College of General Practitioners, the South Auckland Diabetes Summit: An urgent call to action was run at Waipuna Conference Center in July 2019 for those with an interest in the care of individual with diabetes in Primary Care.

Professor David Simmons presented his preliminary findings from his analysis of 25 years of DCSS Audit data, and a panel of experts was facilitated by RNZ's Kim Hill.
